Scope and Contents
The records in this series document Steere's involvement, as Director of NYBG, in a number of key organizations. Overall these records indicate the immediate goals of each organization as well as NYBG's participation in each group. This series is organized into the following 5 sub-series:
Sub-Series A: American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Arranged by topic.
This sub-series contains AAAS's reports, correspondence, program outlines, and minutes from annual meetings. These records focus on the AAAS's efforts to improve scientific communication and education.
Sub-Series B: American Association of Museums (AAM)
Arranged by topic.
This sub-series includes AAM's committee reports and correspondence. These records mainly deal with the curriculum for museum studies and museum accreditation.
Sub-Series C: American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS)
Arranged by topic.
This sub-series includes AIBS's correspondence, committee reports, and membership information. These records document AIBS's goal to standardize and coordinate the academic curriculum for biological studies. Additional AIBS records are found in series 9: Systematic Biology.
Sub-Series D: Council on Biological Sciences Information (COBSI)
Arranged by topic.
COBSI's records include minutes, correspondence, conference reports, and memos. This sub-series also contains a number of drafts for a report entitled "Information Handling in the Life Sciences" (August 20, 1969). This sub-series mainly deals with COBSI's efforts to enhance scientific communication.
Sub-Series E: Committee on Scientific and Technical Communication of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering (SATCOM)

This sub-series contains SATCOM's correspondence, reports, and memos. These records document SATCOM's efforts to enhance scientific and technical communication and standardize scientific publications. Additional records on SATCOM are found in Series 9: Systematic Biology.
