Series 2: Administrative Records, 1896 - 1983, bulk: 1954 - 1983

This series documents the administrative activities of NYBG as well as Steere's individual endeavors. The series is divided into two sub-series:

Sub-Series A: General Administrative Records, 1896-1979

This sub-series includes minutes, reports, memos, and correspondence that document the activities of the Board of Managers, Executive Committee, Advisory Council, and various other NYBG Committees. This series also includes legal agreements and correspondence with Columbia University regarding the John Torrey letters and legal correspondence with Liaison Officer Lewis N. Anderson Jr. of the City of New York Department of Parks. Additional administrative documents in this series include memorial resolutions, annual reports, and NYBG's long range plans.

Sub-Series B: William Campbell Steere, 1954-1983

Included in this sub-series are Steere's speeches, arrangements for his speaking engagements, appointment books, and awards and honors he received. Although Steere's career as NYBG Director ended in 1972, appointment books for subsequent years have been included in this series.
