Series 3: Administrative Correspondence--Subject Files, 1889 - 1946

Scope and Contents

These records include administrative subject records from NYBG’s “founding years” and “transition period.” These records also include early administrative records of NYBG Directors Elmer Drew Merrill and Milton Avery Howe. The records in this series are divided into the following sub-series:

Sub-Series 1: Founding Years, 1889-1933 Arranged alphabetically. This sub-series consists of administrative subject records from 1889-1933. A bulk of the records document activities of Nathaniel Lord Britton. Amongst the subjects covered are banking, the Bronx Parkway East extension, Carnegie Institute magnetic Station, Conservatory Tours, Solicitation of Funds, and Herbarium Specimen Lists. This series also includes a fair number of technical administrative records arranged under subjects, such as construction specifications, financial management, legal agreements, and legislation.

Sub-Series 2: Two Decades of Transition, 1924-1946 Arranged topically, then alphabetically. This sub-series consists of administrative subject records from 1924-1946. The records document administrative activities of Britton, Merrill, Howe, and Robbins. Amongst some of the subjects covered are a Britton Memorial Statement, banking, appeals for education, Medical Plant Exchange, research, NYBG publications, and salary cuts. This series also includes technical administrative records arranged under subject heading legal agreements.
