Scope and Contents
The Samuel Chester Damon collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts and typescripts, research notes, pencil sketches, and photographs during his graduate studies and position with the U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel Chester Damon II (1923-1952) was a taxonomic mycologist born in Baltimore, Maryland 18 November 1923. He gained his B.A. in Botany (1944) at Brown University and Ph.D. (1951) at the University of Iowa. After service in the U.S. Navy in World War II he worked as Taxonomic Mycologist in the Research and Development Laboratories of the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot of the U.S. Army. Damon conducted research and published six articles on the genera Cheiromyces, Sepedonium, and related fungi. Some of his research was done at the New York Botanical Garden with the guidance of Donald P. Rogers. Damon’s life was cut short by Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 28. His herbarium was presented to, and is held by, the NYBG.
