Scope and Contents
The Henry de la Montagne records primarily consist of correspondence related to fundraising, endowments, and routine internal operations of the Garden. The bulk of the collection pertains to the years when Montagne served as a volunteer administrator. The collection contains no personal or biographical information.
These records represent only a small portion of Montagne's administrative files; at least an equal quantity can be found interfiled within the records of the directors he worked under. It appears that the majority of his files were destroyed.

Biographical / Historical
Henry de la Montagne (1888-1982), born in Garden City, Long Island, began his career at the Garden in 1931 as a Business Manager.
His career at the Garden spanned 54 years, during which many of his positions overlapped. From 1933 to 1958, Montagne served as Assistant Director while also holding the role of Business Manager. He was also Secretary of the Board of Managers from 1937 to 1963 and Assistant Treasurer from 1934 to 1939.
From 1958 to 1968, Montagne worked as a full-time volunteer administrator, with a special focus on organizing the records of the directors. In 1968, he was elected an Honorary Member of the Board, and in 1960, he received the Distinguished Service Award.
Montagne died on May 21, 1982, in Bozeman, Montana.
