Biographical / Historical
Marjorie Wolff Anchel (1910-2009) was born in New York, NY on May 6, 1910. She attended Barnard College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1931. She received her Masters of Arts from Columbia University in 1933 (Chemistry) and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1939.
Anchel began her career at The Squibb Institute for Medical Research, Organic Chemistry Division, working there from 1943-1946. She began her work at the Garden in 1946 as a Research Associate, being promoted to Senior Research Associate in 1961. From 1972-1977, Anchel worked as the Senior Chemist and Administrator of the Laboratory. In 1977, she retired from the Garden, having been conferred with the title of Senior Scientist, Emeritus. Her research interests include antibiotics, natural polyacetylenes and chemistry and biogenesis of fungal products.
Anchel is married to Herbert Rackow. Marriage dates are unclear.
