Scope and Contents
The collection documents Wittrock’s research on the food, dye and medicinal plants of the American Indian. The collection contains correspondence, and research and lecture notes. The collection is arranged in two series.

Biographical / Historical
Gustave L. Wittrock (1895-1954) was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 3rd 1895 and died in New York, NY on April 1, 1954. Wittrock attended Grinnell College and received his AB in 1924 and his MA in 1927. After that he worked as an assistant in the botany departments at Johns Hopkins, Grinnell, the University of Washington and the University of Chicago until 1930 when he began work at the New York Botanical Garden where he stayed until his death in 1954. At the Garden he served as a Docent, the Custodian of the Herbarium (1935-1944) and Assistant Curator of Education.
