Biographical / Historical
Gary Lane Smith served as Associate Curator of Bryophytes from 1969 to 1976. He was also appointed Administrator of the Cryptogamic Herbarium and served as such from 1973 until his departure. In addition he was in charge of the NYBG seminar programs and served as Manager of Publications for the Torrey Botanical Club.
Dr. Smith came to the NYBG directly after receiving his PhD from the Columbia University/NYBG graduate program where he studied under Dr. William Steere. He specialized in the study of the Polytrichaceae mosses.
