Scope and Contents

This series contains photographs, personal papers, academic records, and ephemera primarily related to Dr. Isa Degener, with some material related to Dr. Otto Degener. Photographs document locations across Hawaii, including Mauna Loa Strip Road, Mauna Kea, Haleakalā (including the silversword plant), Maui, Waikapuna Beach, Punaluʻu, Kaʻaluʻalu Bay, the Neue Kahuku Reservoir, and the Wailua Complex of Heiaus on Kauaʻi. Also included are photographs of friends, family, professors, and vacations, both before and after Isa met Otto. Locations include Berlin, Guatemala, Mexico, Italy, and Hawaii.

This series also contains Isa Degener’s academic notebooks from her university coursework, along with a student book documenting her completed classes and professors. Additional materials include a short curriculum vitae she wrote in 1949, and documentation of her employment as a research assistant. Personal and family-related materials include ledgers and papers related to her family history, as well as a folder of records from her stepfather, documenting his work as a prison director in Berlin during World War II.

A small selection of materials related to Otto Degener includes identification documents, a baby book, a school yearbook, and a copy of his obituary.

Processing Information

The bulk of the photographs in this series came from photo albums that were discarded due to conservation concerns. Ephemera originally stored with the photographs was kept with the corresponding prints.
