 File — Box: 27

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains correspondence, journal articles, essays, files on various genera, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Hawaiian flora, especially the conservation of endemic species and the activities of several ecological based groups in Hawaii, including the Native Hawaiian Plant Society. Dr. Otto Degener, an avid newspaper reader, clipped and organized hundreds of articles, which are arranged either by subject or by the individuals they reference. Topics covered in depth include deer control, Volcanoes National Park, the Mauna Loa Hunting Club, geothermal energy, hāpuʻu harvesting, Haleakalā National Park, and the development of Mokuleʻia Beach in Waialua – the site of one of the Degener homes. There are also brief biographical sketches of the illustrators who worked with Dr. Degener. In addition, this series contains a manuscript written by John Mortimer Lydgate, a member of the Hillebrand Expedition, which was later published under the title A Short Synopsis of Hawaiian Ferns. The manuscript includes a four-page introductory essay that was never published.
