Scope and Contents

The collection documents Brewer's career as Professor of Agriculture at Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University and his work on the Botany volumes of the Geological Survey of California, 1860-1880 under Josiah Dwight Whitney; including his collaborations with Asa Gray and Sereno Watson. It contains manuscripts, notes, correspondence, and galley proofs. The collection is arranged into three series.

Scope and Contents The collection largely consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence pertaining mostly to Torrey's work as a botanist and professor. Much of the scientific correspondence is in regard to identification of plants from the vast interior of the North American continent collected during government sponsored expeditions. Unrelated letters to and from other correspondents, some of which pre-date Torrey's birth, are also in the collection. It is unclear how Torrey came into possession of these...
